Characters

The Girl

She is a sensitive and observant girl who is torn between feelings of fear, guilt and compassion. Initially choosing silence and avoidance, just as everybody else, but as she begins to understand Filip better, she realizes the injustice of the situation and takes it upon herself to speak out.

Filip

Filip is a quiet boy who is often teased about his clothes and misjudged because of the way he reacts to things. He hardly ever speaks, and unless he is being laughed at, is usually ignored at school. He often expresses his pain through silence or sudden outbursts. Filip teaches us that, although we don’t all have the same opportunities, we all have something important to offer.

The Brother

The brother likes to make jokes at others’ expense and enjoys the approval that brings. Teasing Filip boosts his confidence and makes him feel in control. However, over time, he begins to notice the things he once ignored, as he witnesses skill, perseverance and honesty in someone he once ridiculed.

The Teacher

The teacher does her best to keep order but often misses what is happening beneath the surface. At first, she is quick to judge and slow to listen. It is only when she is directly confronted that she begins to pay more attention and make space for fairness in her classroom.

Themes

Social inequality

Not all children come to school with the same resources, support, or sense of security, which affects how we perceive and treat them. Filip’s story reveals how poverty can affect one’s appearance, self-confidence, opportunities, and sense of belonging. It encourages us to recognise someone’s worth before judging them based solely on what is visible.

Exclusion and cruelty among peers

Teasing and mockery among pupils can quickly escalate into a form of bullying and abuse, causing serious, long-term psychological and physical harm. Filip’s experience shows us how easily adults and classmates can overlook harm when it is disguised as a joke, and group dynamics such as social exclusion can significantly undermine one’s sense of safety and turn school into a hostile environment.

Silence as a form of expression

Filip’s silence and outbursts are his way of responding to being ignored and hurt, and they remind us that behind behaviour there is a story. Listening means paying attention to what is not being said.

Speaking up and protection

Change begins when someone decides to confront cruelty instead of looking away. One voice can often influence the behaviour of an entire group.
